Corps of Engineers, local leaders at odds over speed, timing of Mississippi River levee repairs

COLLINSVILLE — After a wait of three years, the metro-east agency tasked with rebuilding 64 miles of outdated American Bottoms flood protection levees is finally set to start construction next month.

Trouble is, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers district office in St. Louis still has not given its approval to the Southwestern Illinois Flood Prevention District Council for the first phase of the $160 million project — the installation of massive drain systems on the Wood River and Metro East Sanitary District levees.
